The environment-friendly, penetrating and chemical resistant qualities of Xypex, as well as its ability to withstand hydrostatic pressure, have enabled aquariums and zoos to remedy a wide range of concrete related problems: seepage and leaks, salt water ingress, and the protection of potable water.

The most recent Xypex zoo-application was to the benefit of the penguins at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park in Syracuse, New York. The pool housing the Penguin Coast Exhibit encountered severe water leakage problems soon after opening. Approximately 700 to 1,700 gallons of water were disappearing daily, an amount far in excess of the 200 gallons per day that typically evaporates. The exhibit was closed to find the sources of the leakage. Xypex products, including Xypex Concentrate, Admix, Patch’n Plug and FCM 80 were used to stop the seepage and leaks emanating from the concrete slab, the exterior walls and around the glass areas. After more than a year, the exhibit and the outdoor pool re-opened at the end of November to the delight of the 23 penguins who had spent the previous year in an indoor exhibit with three small pools.
